How to See Who Unfollowed You on Instagram for Free (No App, No Password)

Search for a free Instagram unfollower checker and you will find dozens of apps that promise instant results. Most of them are not really free, and the ones that are can cost you your account. There is a method that is genuinely free, needs no login, and cannot get you banned — but nobody selling a subscription wants to tell you about it.

Why most "free" unfollower apps are not free

The pattern is almost always the same. The app is free to download and free to open. You log in, it shows you a blurred list of unfollowers, and then it asks for money to reveal the names — usually a "3-day free trial" that quietly converts to $4.99 per week. That is over $250 a year for something you might want to check once a month.

Worse, the reason they can show you that list instantly is that you logged in. The app scraped your followers from inside your account, which is exactly the behaviour Instagram penalises. We covered what actually happens in this breakdown of password apps and bans. So the "free" app is free in the way a casino is free to enter.

The genuinely free method: your own data

Instagram is legally required to give you a copy of your own data, and that copy contains your full followers and following lists. Downloading it is free, built into the app, and breaks no rules — because you are using an official feature to get your data.

Once you have that file, comparing the two lists is simple arithmetic: anyone in your "following" list who is not in your "followers" list does not follow you back. You do not need an account login for any of it, because the answer is already sitting in the file.

That is the whole idea behind Unfollowly. You drop in the file Instagram sends you and your browser does the comparison locally. Nothing is uploaded — you can confirm it yourself in your browser's network tab — so there is nothing to leak and nothing to ban.

What you can see for free

When you run the check, the counts and a preview of your unfollowers are free. If you want the complete list exported, that is a one-time $4.99 — not a weekly fee. To put that in perspective: the apps that charge $4.99 a week cost more in a single month than Unfollowly costs once, forever. And if you only want a quick answer, you can compare the two lists by hand at no cost at all.

How to do it (about 5 minutes)

  1. In the Instagram app: Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information.
  2. Choose only "Followers and following" and select the JSON format — not HTML. This one setting trips up most people; here is why JSON matters.
  3. Instagram emails you a small file, usually within 5–30 minutes.
  4. Open it in the free checker. Results are instant.

Free, but is it accurate?

Yes — more accurate than the login apps, because it reads your real export rather than a partial scrape. The one honest caveat is that Instagram identifies people by username, not by a permanent ID. If someone changes their username between checks, it can look like they unfollowed you when they only renamed. No tool can avoid this, because the data itself contains no stable IDs.

Bottom line

The free unfollower apps are a subscription trap with your password attached. The data-export method is free for a one-time look, private by design, and impossible to get banned for. It takes a few extra minutes to request your file — and those minutes are exactly what keeps your account safe.
